RE: Windows Vista ***UPDATE***

Like I said I had to idle the AV. If you are using the trial Norton 360 that came with Vista, click Start, then click the Norton360 icon. Wave your cursor over the "PC security" tab. This will bring up a pull down window. Click on "manage firewall" after this opens, uncheck everything in this window. This should open the firewalls. Be sure to reset all these firewalls immediately after installing the printer driver. There is a prompt that tells you to diable the AV when you are about to start the install. I missed this 2X. (duh me) I just simply went into the AV control and turned off all the firewalls. At the end of the driver install it will tell you to restart the computer, don't forget to reset the AV firewalls after the computer has rebooted.

Windows Vista ***UPDATE***

My old Vista thread For all that posted in my old thread I would like to repeat my thanks. :) Back at Christmas time last year I was looking into a new computer for the family after our spare crashed. Well now our #2 computer crashed, and we sort of had our hand forced on the issue. :B No biggie. :B I took the advice of the posters that recommended waiting for the SP1. I am glad I did. I am quite happy with Vista Home Premium SP1 so far. The computer I bought is a Gateway GT5692 "off the shelf" model. We bought it at Best Buy. We have had a scrape with Best Buy in the past but deceided to go back just because we are the type of people that like to give 2nd chances. (A 2nd chance for a certain Chevy dealer resulted in my buying my 2500HD at that dealer.) But anyway, we had an outstanding Best Buy employee help us with making a well informed decision, so kudos to them/him. Many had recommended that I get atleast 2gb memory, this computer has a 4gb memory in it, as well as a triple core processor. It seems to be pretty speedy. The O/S is Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I personally don't see how anyone would like Vista Basic....It is very basic. One thing that Vista is not is idiot proof. :W I loaded my printer/scanner/copier/fax/lawn mower/dishwasher driver 2X before I realized I hadn't idled my anti-virus soft ware. Can you say d'oh! I will say real quick in response to the recommendations in my other thread. I have always been comfortable with Windows, so I leaned this way from the start. In the interest of fairness, and on the recommendations of others on here, and other places, I looked into a MAC. The network administrator where I work has a MACbook and loves it. He says he also has WinXP installed on it. I am thinking great! Just what I need, the best of both worlds! However, the cost was going to be too high even for a desk top. Also, while "Window" shopping :W, I noticed Wal-Mart has a shelf model again that has XP SP2 on it. So there must still be some lingering public apprehension to switching to Vista. Anyway thanks again all. :)

RE: GM transmissions 4L80-e vs. 6L80-e

Andy, as for the 6L90 it looks great but too much work to swap! It all depends on what your definition of "too much work" is. When I was 18yrs old, all of my buddies had Chevy 4x4 pick-ups. Most were hand me downs from their dads. Most were automatics. One day a buddy, and I were contemplating swapping his to a manual. After some minor investigating, we went forward with it. At 18 years old it seemed like a huge challenge. But everything worked the way Chevy intended it to. :) BTW, after word got out that we could do the swap, I lost count of how many we did. :R Now that my son is 18, and has his own Chevy, (see sig: '79 K-30) I find myself drawing on those old days of "R and D" :B Just like my '77 K-30, his '79 K-30 has 4 wheel disc brakes. Also an idea turned reality of mine. :) Moral: All things are possible, it just depends on how much effort you think you are willing to devote to the job. And BTW, I am NOT discouraging anyone from trying this swap. As a matter of fact I would LOVE to hear from someone that has done it. Right now I am contemplating installing a 6 speed manual like my '02 2500HD has, in my '77 K-30. That would be an easy swap given there are no electronics to deal with, and I have a BRAND NEW ZF S6-650 spoken for......for $300.00 none the less :) One other quick note.....Chevy is the KING of interchangeability. So if the OP is willing to do the research into swapping the 6L90 into his Burb, I have no doubts that it can work.

RE: GM transmissions 4L80-e vs. 6L80-e

Google 6L90 and you can read for hours. I was window shopping 2008 Silverado HDs recently, and I was interested in what this transmission was all about. So, I Googled 6L90, and to my surprise there was tons of info, and discussion out on this transmission already. The good news I have found is that there doesn't seem to be any problems yet. Seldom is there something so complex as this that it doesn't have atleast tiny teething problems. I have to wonder if the reason that the 6L90 can handle so much input torque, (660lb/ft) and it is behind an engine with only 400lb/ft if maybe GM is planning on using this transmission behind the baby DMax when it hits the 1/2 ton segment. Hmmmm..........

RE: GM transmissions 4L80-e vs. 6L80-e

It can be done, but it involves a ton of changes. BTW, the transmission is actually called the 6L90. There is no direct gear in this transmission like the 4L80E. The 4L80E/4L85E is actually a Turbo 400 with an over drive gear in it. The 6L90 uses 4 underdrive gears, and 2 overdrives. The 4L80E uses a computer that is integrated into the vehicle's ECM. The 6L90 uses a stand alone ECM, from the information that I have. The 6L90's bell housing was designed to fit the new Generation IV LS small blocks, and it will bolt up to your '94 Surburban's engine, but they are not the same. Only 5 bell housing bolts will bolt up instead of the original 6. There is also a difference of the flywheel locations, thus requiring a spacer for the torque converter. There are a ton of miniscule differences that would take forever to explain, suffice to say it will be easier to rebuild the 4L80E. The good news is however, is that the 6L90 is rated to handle 660lb/ft of input torque! The 4L85E was only ever rated at 450lb/ft at it's best. In my best estimation, the swap would set you back $5,000.00 for the trans, ECM, custom wiring harness, driveshaft modifications, (the 6L90 is longer) and I am not sure if the transmission output shaft is even compatible with your transfer case.

RE: Best MPG?

The Duramax will be 2010 compliant: Clicky Another Clicky Diesel Power's Take: Though Diesel enthusiasts may be fans of billowing black smoke, Uncle Sam and CARB are not. Clean diesels are the future, and GM's getting on board. However, unlike Cummins, it's having to resort to urea after-treatment for emissions compliance with the 2010 regs.

RE: New 08 Dually D/A

Other than a few holes stamped in the frame rail, the GM truck frame is identical to the older models. Using installation instructions for a 2001~2007 Silverado Classic should get you what you need.

RE: trains

Well... first off you can't get to Vegas by rail. The closest you can come is either Needles, CA or Kingman AZ. The route I plotted for you has you taking the Crescent from Atlanta to New Orleans. Then you take the Sunset Limited to Los Angeles. This alone is a 48 hour trip. Then taking the Southwest Chief to Needles or Kingman. Go to the Amtrak Website and you can plan your trip. Count on at least 3-4 days on the train, if not more. Might want to keep an eye toward the gulf. With hurricane Gustav, and Hanna brewing up, this will have a definate effect on this route. My son rode Amcrash from StLouis to New Mexico when they went out to Philmont Scout Ranch. Our scout troop was given an entire coach car to themselves. The conductor did it as a personal courtesy. Because of the passenger loading, it allowed him to do so. So kudos to that Amtrak conductor. :) However, :E The same Amtrak train that they rode derailed near Washington, MO about 2 weeks after they returned. :E Nobody was hurt, thank goodness.

RE: Is this a good truck?

"bulletproof" Me thinks not. Read why: One thing you should be aware of is the fact that these engines required a coolant additive that inhibited corrosion. I rebuilt a 1990 F-350 4x4 7.3L IDI engine that had only 177,000mi on it. The owner of this truck let it set, and never used the coolant additive despite warnings from ford about doing so. It had hydro-locked, and it required pulling the engine, and sleeving the block to fix the problem. The "cavitation/erosion" had been so bad that it had rusted pin holes in the rear most cylinder wall on the driver's side allowing coolant to seep in and lock the engine. Very $$$$$$ to fix. So, buyer beware.

RE: how soon should i get rid of dexcool?

Everything I own (see sig) has Dex-Cool in it. I even have a '90 Suzuki Samurai that I converted to Dex-Cool. I have never had a problem that caused me to even raise an eyebrow. My Blazer has 210,000mi on it, and it has had it's Dex-Cool replaced once. I replaced it when the coolant went from orange to brown. This is a sign of rust forming, and that the corrosion inhibitors are breaking down. This will happen with the green stuff as well, so I didn't worry about it. That was 3 years ago, and no new issues from that change out. I intend on replacing the Dex-Cool, with new Dex-Cool in my 2 2500HDs before winter.

RE: Know how tall you are!

What makes this even worse is the fact that there is no visible black streaks, and just some minor dirt on the front of the wagon. This tells me that this has to be an almost new trailer. Man I hope this wasn't a rookie mistake. I guess it happened, rookie or not. :E I sure hope these people were wearing their seatbelts. I like to eat, but steering wheel is not on my list of favorite foods. Anyone want to bet that the fifth wheel hitch looks about the same as the top of that trailer? Just remember folks, eyes, and ears wide open, and head on a swivel. Can't be too careful.

RE: Frame Rusting ...Winter Prep Package?

On my rigs when the waxy coating disappears, I use the high pressure rinse at the car wash to clean the dirt off. Then I use standard Rust-Oleum "Hard Hat" black to cover the frame. Rust-Oleum "Hard Hat" is only available as an industrial spray paint, and can usually be found at places that supply to industry. I haven't been able to locate it at Wal-Mart.

RE: Mexico confiscating American visitors' diesel trucks?

I believe most, if not all automobile insurance policies are null, and void if you travel to Mexico. I know mine are, but that is a non-issue since I have no desire to visit Mexico.

Know how tall you are!

I hate to see this. This would make for a bad trip. :E http://rvtravel.com/blog/jerry/uploaded_images/low-bridge-fifth-746919.jpg If you assume this trailer is the very common 30' overall length, you could easily believe this guy went from highway speed to a complete stop in 15'. :E again! Link to blog. This can easily be avoided by knowing how tall you are, and watching the signs on the overpasses. Be careful out there!

RE: Mexico confiscating American visitors' diesel trucks?

Good to know. But going south of the border for me means heading into the US of A and I hear they have lots of strange laws too, and even let citizens carry handguns. What is strange about letting responsible adults carry handguns?

RE: Ford's latest reflash does indeed improve mileage

I have an 2008 F450 with 4.3 rear end. It is a Job 1 truck built in May of 2007 with 30,000 miles. It is in for the first re flash of the PCM powertrain control module. This is a computer controlled engine as is all modern diesel engines. The EPA is mandating emission requirements that choke the life out the all new diesel engines. Ford is spending big bucks to ensure that we can get the maximum performance and economy from the new 6.4 liter diesel staying within government requirements. Ford is listening to the loyal customers by continuing to improve their products well after the sale. I will gladly drop my truck in for a 30 minute PCM update that will improve my trucks performance. I bought another Ford because I wanted a fantastic truck with looks and guts. The F450 product is in a league by itself. BTW I am getting 12.9 mpg hand calculated with the old math empty some city mostly highway. I can't wait for service pack 1! Well Said! If you are going to knock Capt. Skup's F-450 then knock it with a comparable truck/5er, not a 2001 dump truck. Sad thing is, that old "dump truck" gets better fuel mileage than the newer diesel engines. Even your beloved Ford. But keep drinking the blue koolaid!!:B That old dump truck probably didn't sticker for $60,000 when new either. :B

RE: Neat Chevrolet Commercial

Yes, GM V8s do get a good 1mpg better than others. "... with truck attributes such as towing, power, truck toughness" aahh yes, Ford, Ford, Ford. Everyone know that. Funny how "truck toughness" does not translate into "most dependable longest lasting trucks on the road".

Of course, I would never choose a dead favorite driver That's too bad. Kyle, and Carl will never be good enough drivers to win 7 championships cumulatively.

RE: 2005 Ford F350 - Mileage on the 6.0 and is it reliable?

If the Duramax is not a consideration, then by all means go with the Cummins. If you deceide you cannot live without the 6.0L PSD, then you will definately want to dump it on someone else before the factory warranty runs out. Which only gives you about 3 years from this point if it is a 2005.
